A Visual Art Movement

...............................................

Sonata Gallery features the visual artworks of “crossover” artists talented in more than one discipline. Certain right-brained people can cross over from non-visual art disciplines to visual art with great success. Often the first discipline becomes apparent in the visual art that is created.  For instance, the visual artwork of some musicians can become a brilliant composition; one can almost hear the colors and shapes that make a piece whole—like movements in a Sonata. The result can be music to the eyes.

What's in a name?

...............................................

“Sonata, in the broadest sense of the word, refers to the title given to musical works composed and played in multiple movements. A sonata often begins with an allegro movement followed by an adagio, and finished with another allegro. Sometimes a dance movement like a minuet precedes the finale.  Sonata form is the term used to describe the structure of the first movement which has two different themes exposed early and developed as a musical ‘argument’ as the themes are repeated throughout the piece. Lengthy variations in tonalities, intensities, rhythms and moods as well as deviations from major to minor keys can distinguish the ‘opposing characteristics’ of each theme and further distance them from each other. Eventually the two themes are reconciled in their purest original forms in the recapitulation. Thanks to the great composers, sonatas are some of the grandest of all musical works.”
